Slide into May!

kaitlyn conway

This season is ALL about the slide. Whether it's a classic neutral or funky embellishments, we are loving the variety of sandals in style this season!

What we are loving about the slide obsession is how there are SO many ways you can wear them. Whether you are running to the grocery, the pool or going out for a night on the town, these shoes are the perfect combination of comfort and style. Here are a few of our favorite slides at the moment.

The Diaper Bag of Our Dreams!

kaitlyn conway

Callie and Rachael with their Fawn Design diaper bags

As many of you know, myself and one of our other co-founders/stylists, Rachael, are both currently expecting our first child. And by "expecting" - I mean these babies could arrive at ANY MOMENT! With both of our due dates within the next few weeks, we are busy getting everything ready for these babies to be here. Final touches on the nurseries, packing our hospital bags, reading and studying on what is going on with our bodies and what to do when the babies get here, and so much more!

For all the mommies out there, you know that there are a lot of new things you have to purchase to get ready for a baby. One of the most important essentials? You guessed it, a good diaper bag! This bag basically become your purse, your survival bag, your emergency kit, the bag that holds all your essentials if you plan to leave your house. Because this bag is about to become your best friend, your partner in crime, so of course you want to make sure its great. Thankfully, there are so many great diaper bags out there that have many features that you will want and need. However, in our humble opinion, we think we have found the diaper bag of all diaper bags! It combines style and function in the most perfect of ways. We obviously love style and if there is going to be a bag that we have to carry with us everywhere, we want it to add to our look, not take away from it. This diaper bag fits the bill. Not only is it beautifully chic, but it's incredibly versatile.

Drumroll please....Fawn Design! These diaper bags are fabulous - made of faux leather so that they are easy to clean, but they have the lush look of real leather. They can be worn both as shoulder bag OR a backpack. Not only is this on point with the backpack trend, but it is also ideal for when you need to be hands-free with your little one in tow. This bag combines style and sophistication with space and functionality. With a total of nine pockets (four outer pockets, give inner pockets), you will have all you need to keep all your mommy supplies organized. We love the look of it so much, we are guilty of carrying it BEFORE our babies have even arrived - it doubles as a great carry-on! What's not to love about a functional diaper bag that doesn't LOOK like a diaper bag? We are SOLD.

What else do we love about Fawn Design? It's roots. Founded by Jenny Wecker, a young mom and entrepreneur who decided there was something missing in the diaper bag market. Jenny learned to sew when she was five, and her and some friends were brainstorming on ways to earn some extra cash while her husband was in still in school and both were employed full-time. The idea of a diaper bag came about, and the design and look of the bag was a hit from the start. So much so that Jenny couldn't keep up with the demand of her customers - she was sewing each bag of by hand! Thankfully they were able to raise enough money from customers and fans of the bags to be able to start having them manufactured, and they haven't looked back since.

We love the fact that Jenny's story shows you that any little dream or idea is possible to make into a reality. Fawn Design currently carries these bags in four different colors - black, brown, gray, and blush. These bags are so popular that they are often sold out, so if you know you want one and they are not sold out, I would suggest pulling the trigger immediately! If they are sold out, make sure you sign up for their e-mail list to ensure you are informed when they restock so you can snag one before they are gone again.

We are beyond excited to welcome these babies in the world soon, and are so glad to already have our Fawn Design diaper bags in tow and ready to go! Whether you are a mommy-to-be or a veteran mom who is willing to admit their diaper bag doesn't measure up, head to www.fawndesign.com to buy yours today :)

Skincare Sit-down with Dr. Jason Hall

kaitlyn conway

Dr. Jason Hall's Knoxville Plastic and Craniofaical Surgery Office - Knoxville, TN

Dr. Jason Hall's Knoxville Plastic and Craniofaical Surgery Office - Knoxville, TN

Nothing describes the skincare beliefs at Dr. Hall’s office better than minimalism. I know right?! I feel like ‘minimalism’ is a weird word for skincare because most people have a lengthy and elaborate skincare regimen. There are thousands of products out there that make all sorts of crazy, too-good-to-be-true claims that make it all very confusing.  However, after meeting with Dr. Hall and his wonderful staff, it became so apparent that less really can be more when it comes to caring for your skin. Being someone that has always struggled with breakouts and my skin, meeting with Dr. Hall was totally eye-opening. I have tried every product known to man and fallen for every infomercial and their 3-step skincare products.

Let’s just say that after our visit with Dr. Hall and his fabulous staff, I have changed my skincare routine significantly and am now a true believer in prevention, less is sometimes more, and sunscreen all day, every day! Dr. Jason Hall is a highly skilled plastic surgeon whose practice - Knoxville Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery -  is located in Knoxville, TN. He is not only passionate about what he does, but it is clear that he is also passionate about educating people while caring for their skin and cosmetic needs. Thankfully he was able to spend a significant amount of time instructing us on the ins and outs of skincare and cosmetic procedures! With that being said, I am going to let you in on some insider scoop and tips Dr. Hall shared with us ;)

Sunscreen:

Elta MD

Elta MD

  • Everyone should wear sunscreen on a daily basis. This is KEY to prevention of wrinkles, static lines, skin discoloration, etc. That suntan/burn may look cute for a few days, but is it worth having lines and/or age spots for the rest of your life? We think not! A moisturizer with SPF is a must if you want beautiful skin for years to come - don’t question it, just do it!

  • There are two different types of sunscreen - physical and chemical. Chemical sunscreen absorbs light and turns it into heat, while physical sunscreens creates a barrier on your skin that deflect and scatter damaging UV rays. Dr. Hall recommends using a physical sunscreen that contains active blockers such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. One that I wear and love is this sunscreen by Elta MD. It is great for sensitive, acne-prone skin AND it also comes in a tinted version. Score!

  • Another line of skincare products that Dr. Hall highly recommended is SkinMedica. They have a fabulous sunscreen you can find here

Topical Vitamin A:

  • A topical vitamin A cream include creams such as tretinoin and retinol. You can find some over the counter versions, or you can get a stronger prescription version through your dermatologist.

  • Topical vitamin A stimulates skin turnover to improve complexion - retinoids have the ability to help unplug pores, even out skin discoloration, restore vibrancy to the complexion, reduce oiliness, treat skin concerns such as acne and psoriasis and improve the appearance of fine wrinkles.

  • Topical Vitamin A has also been suggested to help build collagen fibers within the dermis helping restore elasticity and further improve fine lines

  • This is another one of Dr. Hall’s musts for prevention. He is a firm believer in a physical sunscreen and a topical vitamin A cream as the top two most important skincare products to incorporate into your routine.

Botox:

Getting a consult with Dr. Hall and his licensed medical aesthetician, Cheryl

Getting a consult with Dr. Hall and his licensed medical aesthetician, Cheryl

  • The topic of the hour, right?! There are SO many mixed reviews and opinions on botox. Dr. Hall really believes that (IF you are a good candidate), then botox can be very beneficial. Not only in wrinkle prevention, but it can also keep the lines you may already have from worsening.

    • If you already have “static” lines - aka lines that are visible when you are resting your facial muscles - unfortunately botox will not be able to completely reverse those. However, botox can help paralyze the muscles that we use to make expressions that will make those lines deeper and worse over time.

  • Dr. Hall feels that consultations for Botox are always necessary before deciding if treatment is needed and/or is indeed the right treatment for you and your skin. He will not recommend botox if he doesn’t feel it is right for the patient.

  • Carefully choose the person who will perform your Botox injections. You may pay $1-2 more per unit for someone who is more qualified and knows the anatomy of what they are injecting. Wouldn’t you rather pay a little more for a better quality of service versus potentially ending up with a botched botox job or complications? We sure think so. You can find qualified medical professionals in your area who can perform Botox at www.plasticsurgery.org.

Chemical Peels:

  • Chemical peels can work to soften fine lines and help even out skin tone, BUT not every chemical peel is the same. At Dr. Hall’s office, the chemical peel can be customized according to the individual and their skin.

  • Chemical peels can help to stimulate collagen production. In your late 20’s, unfortunately your collagen production begins to slow down.

  • Chemical peels can have anywhere from mild or severe and the symptoms (skin flaking/peeling, redness of skin) - it really depends on the individual's skincare wants and needs and the type chemical treatment chosen for them.

  • Did you know they make chemical alternatives for all our preggo ladies out there?! Yes, they sure do! For all of the "don'ts" of pregnancy, chemical peels don't have to be one of them! These peels are customized to only use pregnancy-safe ingredients and help to brighten and improve the skin tone. What pregnant female doesn’t want that? Pregnant girls can have fun too, y’all! :)

We hope these tidbits of information helped you like they helped us! Dr. Hall and his team were truly amazing and really made us feel like they were invested in us and our skin. One of our favorite things about Dr. Hall and his staff was their focus on making every patient’s experience individualized.  They reiterated time and time again that the consultation prior to any type of treatment, procedure, or surgery, is the most important piece of the puzzle. They take time to get to know you and your skincare and cosmetic concerns, and then help you decide what treatment route is the best for YOU. It was also clear to us that they are not just about “making a sale.” If you come in asking for a treatment that they truly feel is unnecessary or not a good fit for you, they won’t do it just because you asked. They may instead recommend what they feel will truly help you the most, which sometimes may be a more conservative approach that is also much less invasive and less expensive. This type of outlook and practice can be tough to come by in the field of cosmetics and plastic surgery. We also loved that Dr. Hall kept reminding us that we should all be confident in who we are no matter how many wrinkles or how many breakouts we may have. It was truly refreshing to hear this from someone in his industry.

We so enjoyed our visit in his beautiful office and learned so much about skincare. We would highly recommend this office for anyone interested in any cosmetic procedure and cannot wait to go back ourselves! Visit Dr. Hall’s website for more information regarding the services they provide and for contact information to set up a consultation. We promise you won’t regret it! :)

Krewe L O V E

kaitlyn conway

KREWE is a brand that we have been quite obsessed with for some time now!  It is refreshing to find a sunglasses brand that is constantly coming out with timeless new styles.  We are yet to find a pair that we don't just adore.

Rachael, one of our YOTL stylists, has a pair and you won't find her carrying around her purse without them in it.  Although these sunglasses are not within the typical YOTL budget, we are full believers that any pair of Krewe sunglasses are a great investment piece.  Let us tell you why we love this brand so much and suggest buying yourself a pair as an investment piece.

Reason Number ONE:  KREWE offers a lifetime warranty for their sunglasses!  They realize that their sunglasses can be an expensive purchase, but KREWE sunglasses are built to last. They use a 100-point inspection process when each pair is assembled, so if a defect arises within one year of purchase, they will replace them for free.  If you accidentally break them or they are damaged from regular wear-and-tear over time, they will provide a replacement at a discounted price. Not many eyewear companies offer this generous of a warranty, which makes them a good company to go with if you plan to invest in a pair of sunglasses that you want to keep forever.

Reason Number TWO:  You can custom fit your frames.  KREWE wants to make sure each customer is fully satisfied with the perfect fit!  They have a system in place for tightening, loosening, bending inwards, bending outwards and bending up and down.  Here is a link to the steps of customizing your shades https://www.krewe.com/pages/face-shape-fit

Reason Number THREE:  We love small businesses!  KREWE was founded by Stirling Barrett in 2013.  He is a New Orleans native and an inspiring entrepreneur!  We love hearing stories of successful small business start ups, and KREWE is just one of those stories!

So after hearing more about why we love this brand so much, we wanted to give all of our members and followers a little something extra!  We have partnered with Lou & Co, a gifts and interiors store out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to give you all a 15% promo discount off of all KREWE sunglasses on their site.  They can also get any pair of sunglasses sent next day shipping if you want a pair that is not featured online.

Enter promo code 15OFFKREWE at checkout, and enjoy these chic sunglasses for years to come!

Sydney Powers, University of Alabama alumn and owner of Lou & Co in Tuscaloosa, named her store after her beloved goldendoodle, Lou. Lou & Co carries a wide variety of options, including elegant home decor items, locally made gifts, homemade jam, sorority gifts, baby clothes, jewelry, and more! Our YOTL team is obsessed with all of their cute merchandise, and love that they carry KREWE sunglasses. If you have never checked out their site, now is a great time!

We hope you enjoy this little treat!

Stepping Into Spring

kaitlyn conway

Believe it or not, spring is right around the corner!  It's hard to think about spring transitional pieces when it's cold outside, but we want to make sure you are prepared for this upcoming wardrobe changeover season.  We love this time in between seasons because there are so many versatile pieces that you can wear that will help freshen up your seasonal style rut.

Lighten it up!  Something to think about when finding pieces for this time is lightening up your wardrobe.  We love light color palettes, but especially for this transition!  During the winter months, we are naturally drawn to darker colors for fabrics, nail polishes, etc., but this is the time to switch things up.  Items that incorporate light colored leathers seem to always catch our eye.  This blush faux leather mini skirt is a great example of a spring transitional piece...it incorporates the colder weather fabric, but the color and style make it the perfect piece for transitioning into warmer months.

Layers are a necessity for this period!  You never really know what the temperatures are going to be this time of year, so it's important to wear layering pieces so you can throw them on or off at any time.  Longline light weight jackets and cardigans are perfect pieces to fit these need.  This chiffon longline grey jacket is a great piece because the length of it provides coverage for warmth, but the weight and fabric make it light enough to wear for this time.

We still consider this sweater weather.  If it is chilly enough to wear a long sleeve sweater, we would suggest going with something thinner like the ivory one we have pictured, or a more open-knit sweater that provides more breathability.  Sleeveless sweaters are also a a great option for this time of the year.  Throw on a sleeveless sweater with a light colored scarf, skinny jeans and some mules and you have got a great spring transitional outfit!

We love every season, but we especially love transitioning into a new season because it gives you a chance to pause and take a timeout for your wardrobe.  This is the best time to breathe new life into your wardrobe, so take advantage of it!

YOTL

Closet Cleanout

kaitlyn conway

You have made it through the holidays and it's time to give your closet some love!  We love organizing and simplifying our wardrobes, but we understand that this can be a very overwhelming process to some people.  So we have put together a closet clean-out guide for you to go by, otherwise known as a Closet C U R E.

Here are some YOTL Clean-Out tips and rules that should help you get started and through the process!

TIPS

 •    Try to clean out your closet at least twice a year.

 •    Plan when to organize your closet - put it on your calendar and stick to it.

 •    Organize your closet by season. If you have extra closet space, designate your current closet only for the current season.

 •    Color code your closet - this is the best way to start the process of cleaning out.

 •    Get baskets and/or portable drawers for small items such as socks, camisoles, bathing suits, hats, etc.

 •    Use a hanging closet organizer for items such as scarves, camisoles, belts, etc.

 •    Get rid of all of the hangers that are broken or bent. If you really want your            closet to feel clean, try to use just one style of hanger. Our favorite kind are the velvet no-slip slimline hangers.

RULES

o  Make several different piles to sort your clothes into:

  • Keep: Items you love and wear often
  • Maybe: Items you like but don't wear much
  • Give away/Sell: Items that are in good condition but you are ready to give up
  • Donate/Trash: Items that are not in great condition

o    For the "maybes," ask yourself these questions: if the answer is NO, get rid of it.

  • Does it fit?
  • Would I buy this in a store right now?
  • Have I worn this in the past year?
  • Will I wear this in the next 3-6 months?
  • Will I really miss this if its gone?

o  Get rid of any "trendy" items that are no longer in style, especially if they were             somewhat inexpensive.
o If you can come up with several reasons why you haven't worn something with           the tags still on, it's time to part ways.
o   Going through your closet and getting rid of things will be like taking inventory of          your wardrobe and help you realize what you have too much of and what you really need more of:

  • If you have 10 pairs of black flats or 25 beige sweaters, maybe it is time to go through them and decide which ones you really want to keep and let go of a few others
  • This may also make you realize that while your collection of black flats and beige sweaters runneth over, you are seriously lacking in nude pumps and black sleeveless tops, aka your "missing pieces"

This will help you focus on the pieces you really need versus what you just like when shopping, and will then help you shop smarter and budget accordingly!

We are big fans of consignment shops or local ministries that take donations!  Keep these places in mind when you are making your giveaway pile.  We hope these closet clean-out tips and tricks helps you give your closet the cure it deserves and will leave you feeling refreshed for the new year ahead!

XO,

YOTL

Give your Skin some TLC this Winter

kaitlyn conway

With all this talk of freezing temperatures and snowfall this week, we can't help but think about how much love we need to be showing our skin right now!  If you are anything like us, unfortunately your skins loves to embrace the dry dullness of winter.  We like to say our goal each year is to have "dewy" skin - a very tough task during wintertime. So in order to make sure we are working on our dewy skin,  we use some of these fabulous products and wanted to share them with you!

You may be familiar with some of these products, but our hope is that we give you something new to try out!

Serums are Heaven sent - we can't say enough about them!  BUT we have to say our absolute favorite serum is a splurge item, but we can promise you it is worth every penny.  We heart Clarins Double Serum.  Normally the jumbo bottle is over the typical YOTL $100 price point, but we found it on Amazon for less!  It combines the perfect ratio of oil and water-based ingredients to deliver maximum results. You only have to use a small amount after you cleanse and it will go a long way - we noticed a distinct different in how moisturized and smooth our skin felt in just a few days!  PS - this product is so amazing we have even found our husbands stealing a few pumps to apply to their skin...

For moisturizers, we love Elta MD and Cetapil Sensitive Skin Moisturizing Cream

Let's talk lips!  We try to keep our lips just as moisturized as the rest of our skin, so that when we apply any lip color it goes on like a charm.  For your standard chapstick lip care, we are hooked on Coola's liplux!  For more of a glossy lip moisturizer finish, do yourself a favor and get Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips.  Yes, it's called Nipple Balm, but your lips will love it!

Hard Candy's Hydrating Primer Mist is the perfect product to apply to your face before putting on any face make up for the day.  We just discovered this recently, and can't imagine our daily routines without it now! It certainly helps us to achieve that dewy look we are going for.

Last, but not least, Pond's Cold Cream is just what you need for cleaning your face at the end of the day!  It cleans and moisturizes all at the same time - plus it feels amazing on your skin!  What more can you ask for?

Do yourself a favor and try out some of these products.  We promise your skin will thank you!

XO,

Rachael, Taylor, and Callie

Winter Whites

kaitlyn conway

4222241808_1_1_1+(1).jpg

We cannot say enough about our beloved winter white!  How many times have you heard people say you can’t wear white after Labor Day?  Well throw that advice out the window because that rule is outdated - white is one of our favorite staple colors we like to wear all throughout the year!  We especially love winter white - a creamier version of stark white that is perfect for the colder seasons. The key to incorporating winter white into your fall and winter wardrobe is to choose pieces that use cold-weather fabrics and textures, such as sherpa, faux fur, corduroy, down, wool etc. In a season where we all tend to want to wear all black (we are so guilty of this, too!), stepping out in winter white is like a breath of fresh air. You will instantly stand out in a sea of darker colors and will certainly feel fresh and clean.

We have featured some key winter white pieces in this week’s ‘Weekly Picks’ look in our LookBook. For those that have been nervous to try this trend, we want to encourage you to step out of your box and try wearing winter white. You could start as simple as a sweater or scarf with your favorite denim and booties. If you already love the winter white trend, maybe you will take some of these pieces and be bold and try out a monochromatic winter white outfit - one of our very favorite looks! There are so many ways you can incorporate this color into your wardrobe, and designers everywhere are taking advantage of this trend, so your options are endless!

This color is timeless and worth every penny of investing into some great pieces that utilize it. There is something about it that is so pure, beautiful and chic. After all, it does match winter's mascot, snow, so it only makes sense that we should wear it during the cold months! So if you find yourself needing more of this color or needing to update some winter pieces in your wardrobe, do yourself a favor and purchase some winter white staples.  We promise you won't regret it!

Mod + Jo

kaitlyn conway

If you are a You Own The Look subscriber, you have probably already discovered this fabulous jewelry line, as we have featured several of their pieces in our LookBooks! We absolutely love their pieces, as they are unique but still items you can seamlessly add to any neutral outfit without going over the top. We got the chance to chat with owner and designer of Mod + Jo, Jordan Flynn, to hear about how she made her dreams reality, and what inspires her. The most impressive part? She makes every.single.piece. by handWe have a soft spot for ladies who decide no dream is too big and to reach for the stars, and Jordan is no exception! We can't wait to watch your brand continue to grow. Enjoy!

1. How did you get starting in making jewelry?Ha! This is kind of a funny story. Seven years ago, as a broke college student who was obsessed with the holiday season, I didn't want to let my budget get in the way of my gift giving. I love making anything with my hands (and still do!), and was obsessed with the red string kabbalah bracelet trend that year. Though I am not Jewish, I loved the symbolism the talisman portrayed in warding off misfortune with the evil eye charm. So, with my next-to-nothing budget and my desire to give my girlfriends something meaningful for the holidays, I learned to make these symbolic bracelets and passed them around to all of my friends before the holiday break. They fell in love and began requesting more (as the poor construction didn't hold up so well). In turn, my hobby transformed into a small side project that has exceeded way beyond every expectation I've ever had.

2. Described a moment when your dream was starting to become a reality.  I am currently living it this moment! I have taken a break or two from designing as other life moments too priority in the past (starting my career after college, buying a house with my now husband, etc.) However, I opened my (virtual) doors again late last year, and this spring I took a step back and reevaluated my style and brand. Who I am now versus who I was then - a college student making bracelets on the living room floor of my apartment - and as my style has changed, I felt my brand needed to reflect the same. I made the decision to rebrand my line and it was SO the right move for me. Mod + Jo has been growing faster than I ever anticipated and each day I think to myself, "Pinch me - this is actually happening!"

3. What do you feel like set you and your jewelry apart from others in the industry? Every item in the collection is handmade by me. From gold plating the details in pieces to hammering the texture of our best selling fringe earrings, I am the one contracting each piece that goes out the door to our customers.

4. What inspires you most when you are designing your pieces? As I love to follow upcoming trends and trying out new styles in general, I am mostly inspired by my recent travels. My husband and I have been fortunate enough to do a lot of travel over the past two years and I am always sketching my ideas in my iPhone notes while we're on our adventures so I can turn them into new designs once we get home.

5. What are you most looking forward to over the Christmas holiday? My husband and I are taking a trip to Australia and New Zealand over the holidays. It will be the first time for both of us so we're excited to explore a new country but I also can not wait to gather inspiration for Mod + Jo's Spring 2017 collection. Stay tuned!

Incorporating "Neutral" Colors

kaitlyn conway

If you are a YOTL subscriber or if you follow us on social media, you will quickly realize that we believe neutral pieces play a key role in your wardrobe.  Our core belief is that neutral pieces should be the bones or as we like to say building blocks to everyone's wardrobe essentials.

BUT that is not all we believe, we also think there are "neutral" colors that are a vital component to your closet!  Not everyone only likes to wear white, black, gray and taupe and we recognize that.  Winter is the best season to incorporate these other colors we are talking about.  You will find the best pieces this season that utilize merlot, navy and olive green color palettes.  These colors are everywhere this season, from jackets to skinny jeans to cocktail dresses, you can't miss them.  They aren't loud fussy colors, which is why they easily can be used as some of your building block pieces.

One of the fun parts about fashion that we love is how it is an expression of your personality.  People love to be expressive with their clothing through fun colors and prints.  Now you should know, we adore prints as well!  If you were to go through each of our wardrobes, we could promise that you would find several striped pieces and several pieces that use animal print.  We can't get enough animal print whether it is in a piece of clothing, a scarf or a bracelet.  Prints like these allow you to add an edgy flare to whatever look you are putting together that day!

Fashion is ever changing, so we are constantly finding new colors and patterns that we want to share with you. We hope you find some colorful "neutral" pieces in our LookBooks that will be the perfect addition to your wardrobe.

There are also other outlets besides the retailers that make sure consumers are getting the best deals around.  One app that you need to become familiar with and take advantage of this week and this Holiday season is RetailMeNot.  RetailMeNot is the like the "google" of coupon codes - just search for a specific retailer and it will give you all of the known deals and coupon codes for both in-store and online. It will make sure you find the absolute best price point on any item you have your heart set on!  Take our advice and download this app before Thursday, so you can start getting acquainted with your Black Friday BFF!

Happy Shopping!

'Tis The Season

kaitlyn conway

The Holiday Season is finally here!  We love the overeating, gifting, parties with family and friends and the simple JOY that this season brings along with it.  As wonderful and dear as this season can be, it can also add another layer of "to-do" lists and some extra stress.

YOTL wants to help you with those "to-do" lists and alleviate any stress that may come with this season by providing a weekly Gift Guide leading up until Christmas.  Our goal is to take the legwork out of Holiday shopping for you, so that you can spend more time with those that are nearest and dearest to you.  Our Gift Guide is diverse in the fact that it is geared towards receivers of all kinds...for her (daughter, mom, friend, coworker, etc), for him (significant other, dad, brother, etc.), for baby, for mom-to-be, for the hostess with the mostest and much more.  We hope you find items in the Gift Guide that you can add to your own wish list as well (hint, hint, boyfriends, husbands, significant others - YOTL can make your holiday shopping easier too!).

You will find gifts from retailers all over the country, that have their own unique flare while keeping their price tags under $100.  We hope you love gifting these items to others as much as we do!  Now make yourself a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy this week's Gift Guide!  Cheers to you and yours this Holiday season!

We Heart Transitional Pieces

kaitlyn conway

Transitional pieces are essential for every wardrobe, but we can all relate to the feeling of really needing these essential pieces right now with these crazy warm weather days in October and November! Transitional pieces are those that take you from the heat of summer into the cooler temperatures of fall. If you live in the South especially, you know the weather hasn't been very "fall-like" lately. The problem? We also don't feel right about wearing our favorite summer espadrilles, shorts, or summer dresses when it's November. What's a girl to do?  Make sure you are prepared for the unpredictable temperature changes by having these basic seasonal transitional pieces in your closet.

Some of our favorite pieces are those that are transitional, as you know we like to focus on the building blocks of your wardrobe. Sleeveless sweaters are great for any seasons and also for everything in between. If we find a good sleeveless sweater in ivory, we can promise you we are buying it in black and grey as well because we know we will put it to use!  They are great because they can fit the "look" of the season while not making you too hot or too cold.

Another great piece for your wardrobe in between seasons is black skinny jeans.  You can wear these year around and dress them up or down!  They should be a piece in every woman's wardrobe.  They are great with sleeveless tops, t-shirts, sweaters and even dressier cocktail tops. You can pair them with sandals, wedges, open toe mules, booties or OTK boots. They can be rotated throughout any season and provide the base of just about any look you are trying to achieve.

Vests - we love vests because you can throw them on over anything and everything. One trend we are loving right now in particular is knit vests - it gives you the look and feel of wearing a sweater but without fully having to commit to the bundled up look and regretting it mid-day went the sun comes out and the temperatures are in the high 70s. Throw on a vest with you favorite white tee, a sleeveless dress, or your favorite blouse and you've nailed the transitional look.

Last, but not least...let's talk our favorite transitional accessory, scarves!  Scarves are the perfect accessory to throw on in the mornings when it is still chilly outside, and you can pull them right off when it warms up throughout the day. They add just enough flare to your outfit during the fall and are perfect for these fluctuating temperatures (not to mention the occasional cold chill or hot flash - you girls know what we're talking about!) One of our favorite fall scarf trends are blanket scarves - whether they are thick or thin - they are fabulous because you can wear them wrapped around your neck like a typical scarf, or if it gets chilly at night you can wrap them around yourself like a blanket! It's basically like carrying a jacket around your neck. Done and done.

YOTL hopes to help you get through the awkward "in between" weather as we transition through the seasons without sacrificing your look OR your comfort level. Stay tuned for a lot more transitional building block pieces to come in our upcoming LookBooks!

Confetti

Olivia, owner Confetti

Olivia, owner Confetti

We love getting inspired from entrepreneurs all over the country.  One entrepreneur that caught our attention is Olivia from Confetti.  Confetti is an online boutique based out of New Orleans.  They have great staple pieces that fit right in line with YOTL's mission, so of course we wanted to do a fun giveaway with them and share a little more with you about Olivia and her store!

What is the story behind the creation of Confetti?
Confetti was created almost 2 years ago now! Wow, that's still crazy to me! I studied Fashion Merchandising in college. After many many years of me working in various forms of the retail and fashion industry confetti was born. I've always had a passion for fashion, that along with a passion for making others feel beautiful in the skin they are in... boom, Confetti was created. It was a total dream come true. My parents and now husband have always pushed me to open up a boutique, that motivation along with a little self flare definitely sealed the deal.

How did you decide to name your store Confetti?
I had my boutique name narrowed down to 2 names, along with color schemes, branding and such for each respectively. I was going back and forth with those particular two names on a Friday and Saturday. I walked into church with my mom and dad on Sunday morning and the song "Finally Free" came on. The second line in the song contains the word "Confetti." My mom and I instantly looked at one another and knew that Confetti was the winner. I also love that Confetti makes every occasion more fun and festive, and that's exactly how I want my wonderful confetti ladies to feel. I want them to feel fun and festive whether it's a date night, Sunday Funday or a chill day wearing their favorite white v-neck and distressed denim.

What makes your store unique from other boutiques?
At Confetti we pride ourselves in finding our clients must have items that they can seamlessly work into their existing wardrobes.  Everyday basics and necessary neutrals are items we keep in stock to ensure that everyone can create looks that are perfect for their personal style. We also do plenty trend forecasting to have the season's "Must Have" trends in stock and accessible. We go above and beyond to provide top notch customer service.  Quick, free shipping to our ladies around the United States is offered and every purchase is personally wrapped up in gold tissue. We might be an online boutique, but we want every customer to have a fun experience while shopping. We are always a touch away from helping you find that perfect look.

Who is your ideal customer?
Our ideal customer is someone who loves fun, fashion and has a flair for life. We love dressing our clients. Over the past year and nine months so many clients have turned into friends, and honestly that has got to be one of the most rewarding things thus far. I love that they have grown to trust Confetti to style them for a wedding, girls night and other life events. They know that they will look good, feel good and that is what Confetti is all about.

How have social media and online shopping changed your business?
Confetti is a 100% online boutique. I knew after years in the industry that there was a need for a trendy, affordable online shopping boutique. Many online shopping options are big box stores, and they don't give as personal of touch as we do. In today's fast pace world, convenience is key. With that being said, social media is huge for us! It gives our clients style, virtually. New Collection launches, LookBooks, Sneak Peeks, and other aspects keep our clients involved and we love hearing their feedback. Our full website is open 24/7 for all needs. We have a chat line for any customer assistance and styling needs. Instagram and our Facebook VIP group also keep our clients up to date with the latest arrivals, promos and styling sessions.

Hopefully this Confetti insight gives you some inspiration on this Wednesday!

ACF Jewelry

Caroline Farris, designer, ACF Jewelry

Caroline Farris, designer, ACF Jewelry

A dream that started when she was just barely out of her tweens, Caroline Farris made sure her dream turned to reality 8 years ago when she launched her own jewelry line, ACF Jewelry in 2008. Always having the desire to design, she couldn't ignore her innate need to create beautiful things from the world around her. Gaining her degree in Art History with a minor in Metals and Jewelry Design and Arts Management from Miami of Ohio, she was ready to put all her trades to good use. Caroline lived in New York City for two years after graduation and worked for a prominent fashion designer, Cynthia Rowley. Although she loved the creative energy NYC emitted, Caroline ultimately missed the pace and quality of life of her home state of Tennessee and decided to move home. She acquired a design patent in 2013 and now makes jewelry in het metals studio in her apartment in downtown Knoxville. Utilizing fine metal components including silver, gold, and even brass, her line features pieces for all ages at all price points. Her motto is "Design. Fabricate. Wear. Repeat." We are so glad she chose to follow her dreams so we can enjoy her gorgeous and unique handmade pieces. Now, let's get to know the brains behind the beauty.

How did you get started in making jewelry? I think all girls go through a jewelry making phase. Mine just never ended and I insisted on continuing to refine my skills. We all started with lanyards and friendship bracelets though!

Describe a moment when your dream was starting to become  a reality? When my work was for sale at a boutique in the West Village in NYC and one of the actresses from 'Girls' bought a necklace - I knew I was at least on the map.

What do you feel like sets you and your jewelry apart from others in the industry? Two things - quality and my fabrication process. Being a trained metalsmith, and the fact that most of my pieces are made entirely by hand sets me a part. I also really love using the best quality elements I can source while still maintaining an accessible price point. Nothing I make will ever turn your finger green or change rapidly over time.

What do you like to do when you are not making jewelry? I'm in the all consuming restaurant business. I'm the Front of House manager at Emilia in Market Square.

What inspires you most when designing pieces for ACF? I like the challenge of combining organic components and architectural elements. Many of my pieces feature rough natural stones and clean refined metals.

Building Blocks

kaitlyn conway

We love any excuse to talk fashion, especially when it comes to your own wardrobe 101 guidelines!  As you may be able to tell if you are already a subscriber, we are extremely passionate about focusing on the building blocks of your wardrobe. The basics and building blocks are some of the reasons You Own the Look is here today!

Think of the building blocks of your wardrobe as the foundation of your house.  In order for your house to be solid, your foundation has to be right.  The same goes for your wardrobe.  If your wardrobe solely consists of trendy pieces, you will continue to look back on pictures and have that terrible thought of “why did I ever think it was okay to wear that outfit?”  If you incorporate these staple basic pieces into your wardrobe with the trendy pieces, you can keep it timeless and fresh all at the same time. And even if after a few years you look at the trendy pieces and want to throw them out, you will still have those basic staples in your wardrobe that are so versatile.

What do we mean by building block pieces?  These pieces consist of neutral, solid pieces with clean lines.  The pieces are extremely versatile and can be worn with several different outfits.  For example, a good pair of black skinny jeans are a must for your wardrobe.  You can transition these jeans with several outfits - from a casual day look, to dressing them up for work or even a night out. The jeans become a foundation for several different looks and styles you want to accomplish. The same goes for a plain white tee, a black sleeveless blouse or dress, or that taupe tote bag that fits everything in it but the kitchen sink. Now some of you may be thinking, gosh, staple neutral pieces are not very fun to buy! It is way more fun to find that fabulous red dress to wear to a wedding, or that floral top you have been eyeing ever since you saw your favorite blogger wearing it. Although those things can certainly give you a rush to purchase and you feel like a rockstar wearing them for the first few times (and don’t get us wrong, you LOOK like a rockstar too!), it is usually the staples in your closet that you keep coming back to. Because staple, neutral pieces are not always the most fun to search for or buy, You Own The Look wants to show you the value of these pieces and take the legwork out of you spending your time looking for them. And because we love staple, building block wardrobe pieces so much, we are very particular in searching for them. What does that mean? That means that we don’t just pick the first white top we see - we look at many different things before we present it to you - is the price fair? is it see-through? is it a classic style? can it be worn with multiple different types of outfits? We want to make sure we bring you the best pieces at the best price points - the items that we look at and also say, I need that in my closet too! (side note - let’s all admit that need versus want is sometimes difficult to differentiate when you love fashion, your husband or significant other may just NEVER understand, but don’t worry - WE do!)

We hope that you are starting to understand our love for basics and also start to see the worth they can have in your wardrobe. So what if five other people you know have the same black sleeveless top that you just bought? You can add your favorite printed scarf, your favorite skinny jeans, your favorite statement necklace - or even just a pop of red on your lips - and completely make it your own, unique look. Everything in your wardrobe certainly does NOT have to be neutral. The beauty of these basics are that you can always add your own style flair to them to make them your own. You Own The Look cannot wait to continue to service you and your closet, and to continue helping you build the foundation of your wardrobe!

Here are a few of our favorite "building block" pieces that every female's closet could find a use for!

a basic. shop

kaitlyn conway

We truly love finding people who are passionate about what they do and this industry. Lacey, the owner of basic., is just one of those people!  She launched her online retail store - www.abasicshop.com - just a few weeks ago. Basic.'s tagline is "neutral clothing for the colorful personality" - YOTL and basic. share the same common love for basic, neutral pieces and clean lines.  We are excited for you to get to know the lady behind the curtain of basic. on a more personal level. We got the chance to ask Lacey some key questions to really showcase what makes her and basic. so special!

1) What made you decide to launch your site?

2015 was a doozy for my family and me. There were a lot of highs and there were a lot of lows. During one of those lows, my husband Tom asked what I wanted to do in the right now, and he asked what I saw myself doing down the road. I told him I always thought that, at some point, I’d open up a shop that sold only quality, neutral, staple clothing. His response was, “Couldn’t you do that online in the right now?” So we married my right now with my down the road, and we started working on the site the next week. The next thing we knew, we partnered with one of my closest friends, we bought inventory, Tom built a superb site himself, and a pipe dream evolved into reality.

2) What do you love about basics?
My mom used to make fun of me growing up, and she actually got to a point where she refused to buy me “just another white shirt”. I don’t know a time in my life when I haven’t gravitated to basics. I love the versatility of the simplistic – investing in a piece that I know can serve multiple functions. While many people have more than just the four colors I tend toward in their closets, we all do rely on those staple essentials to anchor our looks. I appreciate that a basic is essentially a blank canvas. Dress it up with a necklace, dress it down with sandals, compliment it with a scarf. There are hundreds of ways to style even just one basic top. I love the freedom of that.

3) What makes your online shop unique or different from others?
My goal for basic. has never been to be “better” than anyone else, because I don’t really believe in that thought process. I think unique is a good term for it. The goal is to be the Shopbop or Revolve of basics, but pared down. We believe that if we can curate a cohesive and complimentary mix of products, then our site could become the go-to spot for anchor pieces. Our objective isn’t to be trendy; we want to be timeless.  We are also unique in that most of our designers are still up and coming.  Our brands are excellent at what they do (you should feel these fabrics… to. die.for.) and how they do it, they just don’t have as much name recognition yet. I like to think we are the right side of momentum in what we are trying to do and with whom we are trying to do it.

4) What is your go-to outfit?
a. Even though my color palette rarely ventures outside of the realm of black, white, and grey, I tend to jump around between go-to outfits. I’ll crush on an outfit for a few months, and then I’ll move onto the next combination. I was really stuck on a pair of go>silk white tapered trousers this summer. They feel like heaven’s sweet touch on your skin and are breathable enough to survive the southern heat. I’ve now moved onto a black reversible midi dress by 7115 by Szeki and a pair of LOQ slides. I featured the dress in navy on Instagram last weekend, primarily because I fully can’t get enough of it. I could wear it every day, for every occasion, and I could style it differently each time. There are about infinity unique looks I could put to it. For the winter, my go-to is usually a pair of destroyed boyfriend jeans and a black, oversized, boxy sweater.

Sit Down with SSD

kaitlyn conway

We are so excited about the ‘blog’ portion of our site! We feel this is going to be a great avenue for our readers and subscribers to get to know us on a more personal level and also an outlet for us to share some great stuff with y’all! We have so many online retailers that we love and will showcase in our LookBooks, but we also want to feature some of our favorite artists, designers, and/or small businesses. The outlet we will use to do so is our “Favorite Things” segment of our blog. There are so many creative and talented people that we know and admire and we want to be able to share them with you all.

This week, we are excited to be featuring Susan Standeffer of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Susan is a jewelry designer and owner of SSD (Susan Standeffer Designs). Although Susan is a mom to 4 boys who are ALL boy, that has never put a stop to her fabulous sense of style and sassy flair. All of her pieces are handmade by her and one of a kind which is what we love the most about her work and also what makes it so special.

The variety of textures and colors she uses, make her pieces unique from other items from other designers and jewelry makers in the business. Not only does she offer a wide variety of colors and textures, she also offers a diverse selection of jewelry pieces in general.  Whether it be a statement cuff, fun pair of earrings, or a cool leather choker that can be worn daily, Susan has something to offer for every outfit and every person.

                                                    Susan Standeffer

                                                    Susan Standeffer

We asked Susan a few questions about herself and about her work and here is what she had to say...

 1. How did you get into designing and making jewelry? I had a piece of jewelry made when my first son was a baby and I remember how special that piece was to me and how much it meant, so I wanted to be able to give that feeling back to other women. Designing jewelry for women to enjoy has been a wonderful experience!

2. Where do you get your inspiration for making pieces? By observing life, playing with raw materials and colors, a specific outfit that needs accessorizing, or a personal story / customer.

3. What is your favorite thing to do when you are not making jewelry? Curling up in my favorite PJ’s at home with a book and my flavored iced coffee.

4. What has been the biggest challenge for SSD? Marketing myself, finding the perfect vendors, and learning how to run a small business.

5. What is your go-to look for this fall season? Distressed jeans, booties, and a cool sweater with an SSD choker, chunky cuff and tassel earrings.

6. What is the hardest piece to make? My new fish skin chokers. They aren't necessarily hard, but very time consuming. I glue 2 pieces of leather together, wait for them to dry, hand strip them into 1/2 inch pieces, measure length, make a hole at the end of each piece, add beads to the the leather ties then finally add the ties to the chokers. There's a lot of time that goes into each one, but I love the natural unique look - and so do my customers!

You can shop some of Susan's fabulous pieces below. Also check out her handmade chokers, featured in this week's LookBook under "Weekly Picks" -      we can't get enough of them!
