Nothing describes the skincare beliefs at Dr. Hall’s office better than minimalism. I know right?! I feel like ‘minimalism’ is a weird word for skincare because most people have a lengthy and elaborate skincare regimen. There are thousands of products out there that make all sorts of crazy, too-good-to-be-true claims that make it all very confusing. However, after meeting with Dr. Hall and his wonderful staff, it became so apparent that less really can be more when it comes to caring for your skin. Being someone that has always struggled with breakouts and my skin, meeting with Dr. Hall was totally eye-opening. I have tried every product known to man and fallen for every infomercial and their 3-step skincare products.
Let’s just say that after our visit with Dr. Hall and his fabulous staff, I have changed my skincare routine significantly and am now a true believer in prevention, less is sometimes more, and sunscreen all day, every day! Dr. Jason Hall is a highly skilled plastic surgeon whose practice - Knoxville Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery - is located in Knoxville, TN. He is not only passionate about what he does, but it is clear that he is also passionate about educating people while caring for their skin and cosmetic needs. Thankfully he was able to spend a significant amount of time instructing us on the ins and outs of skincare and cosmetic procedures! With that being said, I am going to let you in on some insider scoop and tips Dr. Hall shared with us ;)
Everyone should wear sunscreen on a daily basis. This is KEY to prevention of wrinkles, static lines, skin discoloration, etc. That suntan/burn may look cute for a few days, but is it worth having lines and/or age spots for the rest of your life? We think not! A moisturizer with SPF is a must if you want beautiful skin for years to come - don’t question it, just do it!
There are two different types of sunscreen - physical and chemical. Chemical sunscreen absorbs light and turns it into heat, while physical sunscreens creates a barrier on your skin that deflect and scatter damaging UV rays. Dr. Hall recommends using a physical sunscreen that contains active blockers such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. One that I wear and love is this sunscreen by Elta MD. It is great for sensitive, acne-prone skin AND it also comes in a tinted version. Score!
Another line of skincare products that Dr. Hall highly recommended is SkinMedica. They have a fabulous sunscreen you can find here.
Topical Vitamin A:
A topical vitamin A cream include creams such as tretinoin and retinol. You can find some over the counter versions, or you can get a stronger prescription version through your dermatologist.
Topical vitamin A stimulates skin turnover to improve complexion - retinoids have the ability to help unplug pores, even out skin discoloration, restore vibrancy to the complexion, reduce oiliness, treat skin concerns such as acne and psoriasis and improve the appearance of fine wrinkles.
Topical Vitamin A has also been suggested to help build collagen fibers within the dermis helping restore elasticity and further improve fine lines
This is another one of Dr. Hall’s musts for prevention. He is a firm believer in a physical sunscreen and a topical vitamin A cream as the top two most important skincare products to incorporate into your routine.
The topic of the hour, right?! There are SO many mixed reviews and opinions on botox. Dr. Hall really believes that (IF you are a good candidate), then botox can be very beneficial. Not only in wrinkle prevention, but it can also keep the lines you may already have from worsening.
If you already have “static” lines - aka lines that are visible when you are resting your facial muscles - unfortunately botox will not be able to completely reverse those. However, botox can help paralyze the muscles that we use to make expressions that will make those lines deeper and worse over time.
Dr. Hall feels that consultations for Botox are always necessary before deciding if treatment is needed and/or is indeed the right treatment for you and your skin. He will not recommend botox if he doesn’t feel it is right for the patient.
Carefully choose the person who will perform your Botox injections. You may pay $1-2 more per unit for someone who is more qualified and knows the anatomy of what they are injecting. Wouldn’t you rather pay a little more for a better quality of service versus potentially ending up with a botched botox job or complications? We sure think so. You can find qualified medical professionals in your area who can perform Botox at www.plasticsurgery.org.
Chemical peels can work to soften fine lines and help even out skin tone, BUT not every chemical peel is the same. At Dr. Hall’s office, the chemical peel can be customized according to the individual and their skin.
Chemical peels can help to stimulate collagen production. In your late 20’s, unfortunately your collagen production begins to slow down.
Chemical peels can have anywhere from mild or severe and the symptoms (skin flaking/peeling, redness of skin) - it really depends on the individual's skincare wants and needs and the type chemical treatment chosen for them.
Did you know they make chemical alternatives for all our preggo ladies out there?! Yes, they sure do! For all of the "don'ts" of pregnancy, chemical peels don't have to be one of them! These peels are customized to only use pregnancy-safe ingredients and help to brighten and improve the skin tone. What pregnant female doesn’t want that? Pregnant girls can have fun too, y’all! :)
We hope these tidbits of information helped you like they helped us! Dr. Hall and his team were truly amazing and really made us feel like they were invested in us and our skin. One of our favorite things about Dr. Hall and his staff was their focus on making every patient’s experience individualized. They reiterated time and time again that the consultation prior to any type of treatment, procedure, or surgery, is the most important piece of the puzzle. They take time to get to know you and your skincare and cosmetic concerns, and then help you decide what treatment route is the best for YOU. It was also clear to us that they are not just about “making a sale.” If you come in asking for a treatment that they truly feel is unnecessary or not a good fit for you, they won’t do it just because you asked. They may instead recommend what they feel will truly help you the most, which sometimes may be a more conservative approach that is also much less invasive and less expensive. This type of outlook and practice can be tough to come by in the field of cosmetics and plastic surgery. We also loved that Dr. Hall kept reminding us that we should all be confident in who we are no matter how many wrinkles or how many breakouts we may have. It was truly refreshing to hear this from someone in his industry.
We so enjoyed our visit in his beautiful office and learned so much about skincare. We would highly recommend this office for anyone interested in any cosmetic procedure and cannot wait to go back ourselves! Visit Dr. Hall’s website for more information regarding the services they provide and for contact information to set up a consultation. We promise you won’t regret it! :)
